Flooding update
With today's heavy rainfall there has been several 'flood alerts' issued for the River Ecclesbourne around Duffield which has led to a rise in enquiries to the Parish Council on flooding issues.
A Met Office Amber Rain Warning is in place for Derbyshire until 23:59 tonight, with Storm Claudia expected to bring persistent, heavy rainfall throughout the day. 40–60 mm of rain is expected widely across Derbyshire with some places seeing around 80 mm.
If lives are in danger, or there is a risk of injury, contact the emergency services immediately by calling 999.
In 2025 Duffield's volunteer flood warden, Andrew Clements created a Community Flood Plan on behalf of the Parish Council, available on the flooding page of our website - the Flood plan creates a flooding event emergency action plan, offers helpful advice to encourage residents and businesses to check and understand their flood risk, and encourages those at risk of flooding to sign up to the Environment Agency's warning system (River Ecclesbourne and River Derwent). The website page also provides further useful advice and information including links to other agencies who can offer support.
Residents can obtain sandbags and sand from the Parish Council at Cemetery Lodge on Hazelwood Road. Amber Valley Borough Council will also provide sandbags to residents where there is an increased risk. Further advice on all aspects of flooding, as well as information on sandbag collection can be found on the flooding pages of Amber Valley Borough Council's website.
We recommend any residents who are at risk of flooding, sign up to the free Environment Agency/Gov.uk flood alert early warning system which provides early warning messages for river flooding (it cannot provide warning for surface water flooding). Visit Get flood warnings by text, phone or email - GOV.UK to do this. 'Flood alerts' are issued where flooding is possible, to give residents chance to prepare; a 'flood warning' is the next level, where flooding is expected - these warnings may only be issued 30 mins to 2hrs before flooding occurs, which is why it is so important to sign up directly for messages.
Derbyshire County Council is the lead local flood authority and they also provide further information and advice on their website here.
