Detectoring Day at Weston Yates Meadow
Detectoring Day at the Weston Yates Meadow
As many of you will remember, Duffield Parish Council has been the grateful recipient of the generous gift of the meadow opposite Duffield Hall: the Weston Yates Meadow. Whilst this has not officially transferred to the Parish Council's ownership yet, the John Weston's trustees have given us permission to hold our first 'event' in the field: a 'Detectoring Day' on Sunday October 5th, starting at 9.30.
We are pleased to welcome to the field members of the Derby Artefacts Recovery Club (DARC), one of the UK's oldest and well-established metal Detecting societies. Those of you who have watched the fabulous 'Detectorists' BBC TV programme starring Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones won't need any further insights, but the plan is that members of their society explore the field to see if there are any historical artefacts hidden below the soil, which might give us insights into what the field has been used for in the past.
Members of DARC will be on hand to explain to members of the public what detectoring is all about. They will have a 'finds table' which will display anything they unearth which is of interest. We are, obviously, hoping to discover the 'Duffield Hoard', but they might find nothing at all! That's what makes it fascinating!
The event will by weather dependent and may be rearranged if the weather takes a turn for the worse. Any queries, e-mail Mark Spilsbury m.spilsbury@duffieldparishcouncil.gov.uk.
