Applications now open for the role of Parish Councillor - closing date 31st Oct
Following the formal notice of Casual Vacancy published on 2nd September 2025, it was confirmed at the Full Council meeting on 24th September 2025 that there had been no request for a by-election. What does becoming a Parish Councillor involve?
A Parish Councillor is an elected representative, not a volunteer or employee, and normally serves for a four year term (except when elected in a by-election or co-opted, when they serve until the next election).
The main role of a Parish Councillor is to represent the views of all residents within the Parish, and to listen to and understand the views and needs of different groups in the community (such as young and older people).
As a Councillor, there is a responsibility to be well-informed, especially about diverse local views. Diversity is encouraged as Councillors from different backgrounds better represent the whole community.
There are no formal qualifications required to be a Councillor and there is no requirement to represent any political party. A Parish Councillor is unpaid (other than a set amount for expenses, paid yearly) and you must be willing to give up some of your spare time, including attending regular meetings in person.
Applicants should have been living or working in the Parish of Duffield (or within 4.8km/3mi of the boundary) for at least the past 12 months. They must also be over 18. Further criteria are outlined in the vacancy post on the Parish Council website.
They must comply with the Code of Member Conduct.
Applying for the post of Parish Councillor might be for you if:
- you have a solid interest in all things Duffield and enjoy getting involved with the local community;
- you are an excellent communicator, both in person and in writing;
- you're willing to work closely with other members of the Parish Council and to maintain good working relationships with all members and staff;
- you're happy to work with, and maintain good relationships with other members of the community (such as voluntary groups and charities);
- you're willing to undertake relevant training;
- you're able to attend meetings of the council (or the meetings of other local authorities and local bodies) in the evening and events in the evening and at weekends;
- you're flexible, enthusiastic and happy to engage in constructive debate!
In addition, it might also be beneficial if you have some experience of working in the not-for-profit or public sector, or have any knowledge of HR, procurement, contract management, financial control or risk management and compliance, public relations, or basic knowledge of legal issues relating to town and parish councils or local authorities.
